Citizen Carl was a finalist for 2024 New Mexico-Arizona Book Awards in two categories: history/New Mexico subject and biography/New Mexico subject. The competition, now in its 19th year, is sponsored by the New Mexico Book Coop, a partnership of over 1,200 publishers and authors interested in showcasing and selling books about New Mexico, Arizona, and the Southwest.
The winner in the biography/New Mexico category was Pablo Abeita: The Life and Times of a Native Statesman of Isleta Pueblo, 1871–1940 by Malcolm Ebright and Rick Hendricks. The other finalist was Don Perkins: A Champion’s Life by Richard Melzer.
The winner in the history/New Mexico category was Maria and Modernism by Roshii Montano, David Roche and Diane Pardue, ed. The other finalists were Crosses of Iron by Nick Pappas, New Mexico’s Wicked City by Robert Tórrez, Under the Piñon Tree by
Jerry D. Thompson, and Pablo Abeita.
There were about 100 history books and about 80 biographies or autobiographies in the competition.
Several of the honorees were published by University New Mexico Press, as was Citizen Carl: The Editor Who Cracked Teapot Dome, Shot a Judge and Invented the Parking Meter.
